Some say “comparison is the thief of joy.”

I agree when the topic is: “How much more gray hair do I have now than when I was 30?” But there are exceptions like: “How has the house I grew up in changed?” or “What did this land look like before there was a city?”

With these two paintings, I love comparing what the places look like at different times of the year since the images focus on seasonally-dependent aspects.

Driving by the TREES ON OBRIEN in spring and summer, I never gave them a second glance. Then in mid-October, they revealed themselves to be a fantastic mix of species — some had flame-like foliage and others chartreuse, while the tallest had already shed their leaves.

During the warm months, dense greenery shrouds the tree branches at the END OF 6TH STREET. I happened to see them one winter morning while driving to an appointment and the exposed, web-like matrix caught my eye.

The sparks for these images had everything to do with timing, which is an idea I can easily fixate on: How much of our fate depends on timing? Is there such a thing as the right season, wrong day, or ideal moment? Did pausing to look at an interesting tree mean I missed meeting a new friend or avoided a fender bender? And ultimately, am I better or worse for the sequence of events?

I recently watched a movie about this concept (Sliding Doors, 1998). It introduced a new possibility: perhaps the better and worse sequences are ultimately the same — we end up where we are supposed to be either way. I find that idea comforting.

While writing this, I have also come to the following conclusions:
1. Second-guessing every decision in my life is the true thief of joy.
2. Those moments on OBRIEN and 6TH STREET were quietly exceptional, and comparison helped me to fully appreciate them.
