Notes on my art and creative process

(quick sketch of migratory birds)

A short note this month…

While shoveling snow the consistency of wet cement last weekend (and wondering for the hundredth time if there is a mathematical formula that can produce the most efficient pattern for clearing snow over a given surface that takes into consideration the height/weight/layering of the fluff/crust/ice), I glanced up and witnessed a mesmerizing sight. Several flocks of migratory birds were flying southwest and their “V” formations overlapped in unpredictable and dynamic ways. I stood there spellbound as the shape constantly shifted like thin ribbons in an ocean current. I wanted to take a photo with my phone and realized it was inside — then fully took in the marvel above me, knowing that it was fleeting. Given the last few weeks, I am thankful for this wondrous experience.

I am also thankful for you taking the time to read this newsletter month after month. I am often surprised how the theme reveals itself as the revision process unfolds and then how it is received by wider world.

Lastly, I am grateful for those who look at the drafts: Katy, a college friend who just happens to be an English professor; Cecele, a childhood friend who volunteers as my Quality-Assurance/Quality-Control Department; and my mom, who reviews it just before I press “Send” (because if anyone wonders where I got my attention to detail, look no further).

Here’s to a peaceful migration into winter.
