I find repetition (aka “paintings of paintings of paintings”) to be a useful practice because once I am familiar with an image’s composition, values, and general colors, other aspects/layers are revealed in future versions. For example: in the first iterations, I treated the front of the barn uniformly; in later versions, I conveyed more color nuances. I look at it like visiting a new city — a first trip to NYC is about Times Square and Central Park, while subsequent visits can include The Morgan Library and sampling *all* the vegan donuts in Brooklyn. Reflecting on the series, I think the paintings improve as I do more of them. Part of this is because with multiples, I feel less precious about any one in particular. A single image doesn’t have to be the End-All-Be-All and each one is simply a stepping stone along a path. That is very freeing.
