I understand why painters and photographers go to great lengths to capture specific moments. Whether it’s traveling to distant places and/or arranging “just the right time and place” scenarios, the desire to share something extraordinary can be an artist’s primary goal. I often think about the thousands of images a National Geographic photographer takes knowing that only the two or three most spectacular will make it into the magazine. I also greatly appreciate completely ordinary instants. It can be a single tree, a bit of fence spotted on a walk, or a house — like the pink one I fixate on each time I go to the market. It looks best in the winter, especially when there is some snow. The dark tree on the sidewalk provides strong contrast with its subdued pink, that sometimes looks warm and sometimes looks cool. The background trees and buildings don’t overpower the subtle prominence of the structure. And it’s got a minty-green roof! All of that is to say: this pink house is quietly special and I love to paint it. In these dramatic times, here’s to finding understated joys.
