With all the trees, mountains, and dramatic cloudscapes in Montana, I find painting inspiration around every corner. Sometimes even just turning in the same spot to see different perspectives can yield multiple image ideas.

These two paintings were sparked during my drive to pick up a weekly share of CSA (community-supported agriculture). While on the small road into Two Bear Farm, I found the intense sunlight soaking a distant field impossible to ignore. On the way out, a band of light illuminated my favorite grove of aspens. Both moments felt vibrant, moving, and therefore “painting-worthy.”

Visiting the farm has led me to a different understanding of food. Sure carrots are still carrots that can be chopped, shredded, or sliced — but seeing the soil where they actually grow, feeling how delicate they are in early season (think bendable toothpicks), and learning about the challenges of small-scale, thoughtful farming (late frosts, too much rain, mosquitos, not enough rain, smoke) has clarified the path between field and kitchen in a meaningful way.

I previously took these carrots for granted, and now I welcome a larger perspective.

“We have neglected the truth that a good farmer is a craftsman of the highest order, a kind of artist.”
